This past week we celebrated the birth of America. Much has happened over the past year pertaining to the liberties we have and how they interplay with fear. The world was taken by storm with the COVID-19 pandemic last year and everyone- from policy makers to parishoners- weaponized fear in very effective ways. Why does this happen? Why is fear such a useful tool to those in power? How does salvation through Christ alone change how we see and experience fear? In good men, the fear of God is a holy awe or reverence of God and his laws, which springs from a just view and real love of the divine character, leading the subjects of it to hate and shun every thing that can offend such a holy being, and inclining them to aim at perfect obedience. This is filial fear.
